Hand grenade found from greenbelt

ISLAMABAD: An abandoned hand grenade was found on a greenbelt in I-10/1 on Tuesday, police said.

The hand grenade was spotted by a truck driver, who then informed the police.

The police cordoned off the area and called in the bomb disposal squad.

The grenade was defused and taken to a police station. Police said it was locally produced by a factory in Wah.

Separately, the police are searching for 16 who disappeared after allegedly injuring a police official, identified as Constable Akhter Mehmood, in an attack, they said.

The constable was deployed at the Rawal Dam picket, where he spotted wagons on Park Road.

Police said he intercepted the vehicles and asked the passengers to identify themselves.

The police claimed the passengers became angry and argued with the constable, and then one of the passengers hit him with a blunt weapon.

He lost consciousness as a result, they said, and was found my passersby who informed the police.

He is now in hospital with a head injury and a fractured leg.
