From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1943: Seventy-five years ago: Sentence quashed

LAHORE: An interesting development took place at the Lahore High Court on Thursday [June 17] when a sentence of six months’ simple imprisonment passed by Mr. Justice Mohammad Munir against a police constable, Kidar Nath, for contempt of court, was immediately afterwards quashed by His Lordship on an apology tendered by the head constable.

A notice had been issued to Kidar Nath by His Lordship to show cause why he should not be dealt with for contempt of court for bringing pressure on a villager of Kangra district, to withdraw a ‘Habeas Corpus’ petition pending before His Lordship.

In response to the notice Kidar Nath appeared before His Lordship and filed a statement denying the allegations made against him. His Lordship found him guilty. While the parties were coming out of the Court room the head constable appeared before His Lordship, pleaded guilty to the charge and asked for mercy. His Lordship accepted the apology and acquitted him with a warning. — Dawn Delhi
