KARACHI: Inspector General of Police Amjad Javed Saleemi on Friday assumed his new responsibilities here at the Central Police Office and held an introductory meeting with senior police officers.

He took a detailed view of all projects of the police and administrative issues and issued necessary directions to this effect, according to a police spokesperson.

Later, speaking to media, he vowed that there would be no compromise on peace, adding that there would also be no compromise on merit.

He said that ensuring free and fair elections was his first priority.

The new IGP also appreciated the performance of outgoing IG A.D. Khowaja and vowed that he would continue the steps taken by his predecessor. “All operations against crime would continue,” he said.

He said implementation of the National Action Plan would continue uninterrupted.

He observed that in order to further strengthen security steps and achieve better results, coordination with Rangers, other law enforcement agencies and federal agencies would be enhanced.

“I want to assure the people that the police would fulfil their professional responsibility for maintenance of law and order,” he said.

Young man shot dead, sister hurt

A young man was shot dead and his younger sister wounded in an armed attack in Shah Faisal Colony late on Thursday night.

Police said that Waqar Rafiq, 32, and his sister, Fiza, 11, were sitting outside their house in Moria Khan Goth near Chota Gate of Airport area when armed motorcyclists opened fire on them and rode away.

The wounded siblings were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where doctors pronounced Waqar dead on arrival, said Dr Seemin Jamali, the executive director of the hospital.

He sustained a bullet wound in the abdomen.

The condition of the girl was said to be out of danger as she was shot in the arm.

The police suspected some personal enmity behind the incident.

A case was registered against unknown persons.

The victim originally hailed from the Hazara region and sold chips and other eatables in the area.
