30-foot canal breach inundates cotton, cane fields

RAHIM YAR KHAN: A 30-foot breach occurred in Abbasia Feeder Canal, inundating sugarcane and cotton fields near Chak 73-Abbasia, Liaqatpur tehsil, some 68-km from here on Wednesday.

Irrigation Executive Engineer Khanpur Division Farooq Khan told Dawn that Abbasia Feeder Canal irrigated different areas of Feroza Town and it started from main Abbasia Link Canal at Head Qasimwala. He said at 4am, a 30-foot breach occurred between Rd 46 and 47 in upper side of Abbasia Feeder Canal near Chak 73-A. The water flow in the canal was 2,100 cusec but its actual discharge was 3,200 cusec. Water flowed into sugarcane and cotton fields of adjoining area.

He said initially the water flow was diverted towards a nearby seepage drain to save the crops. Khan said the supply of water was stopped from Head Panjnand in Abbasia Link Canal and from Head Qasimwala in the Abbasia Feeder Canal. He said the breach would be plugged at the earliest.
