Dr Najmi resigns as law secretary

LAHORE: Punjab law and parliamentary affairs secretary Dr Syed Abul Hassan Najmi, who has been serving the Shahbaz government on contract basis since October 2009, has resigned from his position, giving a free hand to the caretakers to post some other officer in his place.

Dr Najmi’s one-month notice will expire on June 30.

After joining the department, Dr Najmi restructured it on corporate lines and helped the government enact around 250 pieces of legislation.

Talking to Dawn, Dr Najmi said during his tenure he ensured the department made all legislation available online and dovetailed laws’ rules and regulations without putting extra financial burden on the Punjab government.

He said that some 400 laws’ Urdu translation had also been finalised and uploaded on the department’s website.

The laws’ translation was done by the University of Gujrat, which had won the tender to do the job.

Dr Najmi said that he had trained new officers after the judicial officers left the department. He said a number of trained officers had also left the department after finding jobs in the federal government and other sectors.

It may be mentioned that Dr Najmi had retired as Punjab Assembly secretary in 2004 and then served as law faculty dean at University of Central Punjab till 2006. Former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif had appointed Dr Najmi as law secretary in October 2009.
