Traffic mayhem

THIS refers to the letter ‘Chinese and our traffic’ (May 23). The writer has suggested that while the Chinese have been working in different sectors of Pakistan, including garbage disposal, a few of them should be diverted to train Pakistani drivers in following traffic rules.

Traffic in Karachi must be the worst in the country. Would you believe that in Karachi, coming from the opposite direction on a one-way road is something normal?

A friend of mine got injured twice in such a despicable practice. The pedestrians can’t even think of somebody approaching them from behind. I have even seen traffic police personnel indulging in this practice in their white uniform in front of Askari IV, Rashid Minhas Road, Karachi.

The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that, what to speak of the Chinese, even the aliens from some other planet won’t be able to fix it. There is only one solution to this problem. Cameras should be installed at all those places where traffic rules are generally flouted.

All those caught, should be fined heavily and their vehicles impounded. Fifty per cent of the fine collected should be given to the traffic police personnel who apprehend the violators of traffic rules. The traffic police should be as uncompromising as the motorway police. Motorway police also belong to the same country – Pakistan.
