HYDERABAD: A division bench of the Sindh High Court’s Hyderabad circuit issued notices to respondent Rangers and police officers for June 6 on a petition regarding alleged detention of a lawyer who also runs his business of informal lending.

The Mirpurkhas SSP was ordered to personally appear before the bench on the date along with a report regarding the allegation.

In his petition Heman Khiloo Meghwar submitted that his brother, Advocate Hero Meghwar, who also ran a business of informal lending in Kot Ghulam Mohammed, was picked up by personnel of police and other agencies on Thursday (May 24).

He stated that law enforcement agencies’ personnel picked him up while he was sitting at his shop at about 4.30pm. The petitioner claimed that about 10 personnel in civvies drove to the shop in a double-cabin vehicle and a car, one of them bearing registration number SP-1225.

The petitioner said he tried to trace out his brother but in vain.

He said his brother was not involved in any crime, and prayed to direct the respondents to produce him before the court.

The bench issued notices to the director general of Sindh Rangers, commanding officer of the Chhor cantonment, commanding officer of the Hyderabad cantonment, SSP of Mirpurkhas, official in-charge of the Mirpurkhas CIA Centre and SHO of the Kot Ghulam Mohammed police station for June 6.

Hunger strike against ‘enforced disappearances’

The hunger strike started on Thursday at the local press club in protest against the alleged enforced disappearance of scores of political and nationalist activists in Sindh entered the second day here on Friday.

It was held by five-member organising body of the Youth Action committee (YAC) comprising Shahzad Lashari, Sindhu Nawaz, Hamza Chandio, Mehran Buriro and Sohail Bhutto.

Carrying banners and placards, a number of youths participating in it shouted slogans for the safe recovery of missing persons.

They demanded of the government and institutions concerned to play their role in the safe recovery of 146 missing persons of Sindh immediately.

The condition of seven protesters worsened and they were administered drips on the occasion.

Those who visited the hunger strike camp and expressed solidarity with protesters included Dr Niaz Kalani of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz-Bashir, Nawaz Shah of the Jeay Sindh Mahaz, writer Manzoor Thaheem, advocate Ali Palh, Allama Masood Jamal of the Pakistan Progressive Writers Association.

In Khairpur, a camp was set up at the Sessions Court Road under the scorching sun in protest against Karachi police torture of the family members of missing persons of Sindh.

It was established by the Sindh United Party (SUP) and heads of various social organisations, social and political parties, civil society activists.
