BRT workers damage another gas pipeline

PESHAWAR: Workers of the Bus Rapid Transit project damaged Bus damaged another main pipeline of the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited in Hayatabad here on Saturday suspending gas supply to domestic and commercial consumers for many hours.

On May 16, the BRT workers had damaged two main pipelines in Firdus Chowk and Hashtnagri areas causing gas suspension for 36 hours inconveniencing more than half of the local population.

The SNGPL officials said the pipeline was damaged at around 12:30pm and the repairs began shortly thereafter.

They said the heavy rain troubled workers but they kept repairing the pipeline.

The people told Dawn that the incident suspended gas supply to Hayatabad Township and Hayatabad Industrial Estate for many hours.

They criticised the BRT workers for making their lives extremely miserable by their recklessness and complained that the gas pipelines had been damaged many times since the work on the bus project began months ago.

The people said the construction firm was bound by the agreement to carry out digging with extra care to prevent damages to the sensitive installations as the people became their ultimate sufferers.

When contacted in the evening, SNGPL, Peshawar, general manager Arbab Saqib claimed that the pipeline repairs had been completed.

He appreciated members of his technical staff for continuing with the repairs despite bad weather and fasting.

The repeated phone calls to the Peshawar Development Authority director general on the incident went unanswered.
