Malay tsunami

THE ‘Malay tsunami’ is a metaphor used for Dr Mahatir Mohamad’s comeback in the national politics of Malaysia. The nonagenarian statesman swept away his political rivals a few days ago when he achieved a stunning and historic election victory. His victory reflects the trust the Malay people have in his leadership.

As prime minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2001, he single-handedly managed the economic resurgence of the country. It was Mahatir who transformed the country into an economic giant in the region. Putting his country firmly on the path to prosperity, his greatest legacy was to voluntarily leave power and make room for others to steer the ship of state.

It was sad that his successors succumbed to temptation and let loose a reign of corruption forcing him to give up retirement and lead an opposition wanting to put Malaysia back on the road to progress. The 92-year-old Mahatir has emerged again as a hope for his people.

Pakistan finds itself in a similar situation. Our external debt is approaching $100 billion. The country is also in need of a saviour of Mahatir’s calibre. Let us pray that the people’s supplications are answered in the forthcoming election.
