From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1968: Fifty Years Ago: Monem’s miraculous escape

DACCA: The E. Wing Governor, Mr Abdul Monem Khan, today [April 24] had a miraculous escape while on relief operation in tornado-battered areas of Faridpur district.

The accident took place at Bhedarganj when a two-seater helicopter with the Governor and the Deputy Commissioner on board plunged to earth after gaining a height of 30 to 35 feet. As the aircraft was airborne, within minutes, it developed trouble and its pilot had a hard time controlling it. It crashed on the ground from a height of five or six feet and was damaged.

The Governor, while talking to newsmen on return here, said that he received a jolt as the plane crashed with a bang. He thanked the pilot for his agility to save it from disaster.

Incidentally, it was the third time within four days that the Governor escaped narrowly. In Chittagong, where he was on a tour, his new Mercedes Benz car was smashed from behind when it was hit by his protection car, while on way to Mirsarai on Monday last. Also his plane was caught in storm near Dacca when he was returning from Chittagong. After 45-minute flight, the plane had to be diverted to Chittagong.
