Courteous manners

THIS is apropos the letter ‘UK doctor’s courtesy’ (April 19). The missive made me recall a similar experience, but in Pakistan.

It was perhaps the year 1968 when I was called for an interview for a post of programme producer at PTV in Karachi. Mr Aslam Azhar, then director-general/managing director, was the chairman of the three-member interview board.

When my name was called, I was taken by surprise to find Mr Azhar opening the door from inside, shaking my hand with a smile and guiding me to my seat.

He sat down only after I took my seat. After the interview, he escorted me to the door, opened it, shook hands again and bade farewell with a smile. That I was not selected, I didn’t mind and harboured no ill will. The courtesy that was extended to me is unforgettable half a century later.

The British doctor’s courtesy shows there are good people everywhere. Instead of always being critical of our compatriots, we should highlight those who deserve appreciation.
