FROM THE PAST PAGES OF DAWN: 1968: Fifty years ago: East Wing MPA shot dead

DACCA: Mollah Abul Kalam Azad, an Opposition Member of the East Pakistan Provincial Assem­bly, was shot dead at his home village, Atari in Rajshahi district last night [April 13] while returning home from his commercial firm. He was about 45.

According to reports received here another person, Mr Azimuddin, who was accompanying the MPA, was also killed by the assassin’s bullets.

When contacted, the Superintendent of Police, Rajshahi, said today the Additional Superintendent of Police had already rushed to Atari, about 60 miles from Rajshahi town.

Two persons were arrested carrying the butt of a gun near the place of occurrence of the incident by members of the public, Police said. The third man accompanying these two persons escaped. — Agency

[Meanwhile, as reported by our correspondent in Daharki,] the Central Industries Secretary, Mr S.S. Jafri, firing the eternal gas flame to put into commission the Mari gas-field, the second largest in Pakistan, disclosed here today [April 14] that negotiations were under way with three U.S. companies and a fourth had approached the Government for oil exploration in Pakistan.
