Ahmed bags maiden golf title

KARACHI: Emerging golfer Ahmed Baig of Lahore Garrison added another feather to his cap by winning maiden title as curtain falls on the 18th Sindh Amateurs Golf Championship at the Karachi Golf Club (KGC) on Sunday.

Baig, who finished runner-up to Ashiq Hussain in the 57th National Amateurs Golf Championship at Peshawar recently, played best round of two under 70 to maintain his ascendancy with three round aggregate of par 216. He had successive rounds of 73, 73 on the first two days.

With Faldo under-21 series and Qatar Amateurs titles under his belt, Baig had emerged as a strong contender after sharing top slot with Sajid Khan on the penultimate day.

He finished five shots ahead of defending champion Taimur Khan of Peshawar who returned with 221 – 72, 78, 71. Despite playing a bad second round of 78, Taimur recovered with one under 71 to earn some consolation.

M. Sharif of West Wind Golf Club (WWGC) also finished with similar score of 221 but was declared second runner-up on the basis of last round score. He played a par round on the concluding day.

At 222 was overnight co-leader Sajid while at 225 was Khushal Khan.

Zohaib Asif and M. Rehman finished with a three-round aggregate of 227, 11 over followed by Italian Luca Guidi at 229.

Meanwhile, Humaira Khalid of the KGC, who annexed the ladies title, stole the day’s limelight with an excellent Hole-in-One on the hole 16th yellow.

Humaira, who is also executive committee member of the Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF), carded 88 and 82 in the first and second rounds for a total of 170 to emerge champion.

Another promising player Aania Farooq finished runner-up, seven shots off the eventual champion at 177. Her scores were 85 and 92.

Humaira was awarded a complete tailor-made rogue golf set on her feat by former top amateur golfer of the country Ali Hai.
