Sara, Aqeel, Shahzad shine in national tennis

LAHORE: While Sara Mansoor and Sara Mehboob entered the final of their ladies’ singles, Aqeel Khan and Shahzad Khan cruised into the final of the men’s doubles in the National Grass Court Tennis Championships at the Punjab Lawn Tennis Association’s courts here on Thursday.

Noor Malik, who had beaten Esha Jawad in a thrilling quarter-final 6-3, 6-3, lost the semi-final to top seed Sara Mehboob 6-1, 6-3.

Sara Mansoor outclassed Mehwish 6-1, 7-5 in the second semi-final to enter the final.

In the men’s doubles’ first semi-final, Aqeel and Shahzad beat Heera Ashiq and Abdul Rehman 6-2, 6-3. Muhammad Abid and Usman Rafique recovered to beat a spirited pair of brothers Muzammil Murtaza and Mudassir 3-6, 7-6, 10-8.

Before the semi-finals, Aqeel and Shahzad beat Asadullah and Barkatullah 6-3, 6-2 in the quarters.

Ashiq and Abdul Rehman drafted victory against Ahmed Babar and Sid Siddique 6-3, 7-4.

Muzammil and Mudassir Murtaza fought hard against Abdul Haider and Zahid Mujhaid to win 1-6, 7-6, 10-6 and Muhammad Abid and Usman Rafique carved out a 6-3, 6-1 win against Talha Waheed and Fayyaz Khan.
