Importer held in Rs9bn fraud case

PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has arrested Jameel Ahmad Jan, CEO M/S Jan Builder Peshawar, for his alleged involvement in corruption and corrupt practices causing a loss of approximately Rs9 billion to the national exchequer.

According to a statement issued here on Thursday, it was revealed during the course of investigation that as per import policy 2016 import of vehicles used for over five years was banned.

It stated that Jameel Ahmad, being importer, in connivance with officials of the Customs Dry Port, Peshawar and JS Bank Karachi planned to clear construction machinery illegally and in violation of applicable rules. The accused persons, while in connivance with each other, illegally managed to clear 488 pieces of old machinery worth over Rs600 million as assessed by the department, whereas market value of the same was over Rs3 billion.

The clearance was in complete violation of the import policy 2016. In this way, so far colossal loss of over Rs9 billion has been caused to the government exchequer, it said. It was stated that principal appraiser Shahid Akbar, appraiser Abdul Hadi and Hidayatullah, appraiser of the customs dry port, and vice-president of JS Bank Karachi Mohammad Arafat had already been arrested in the instant case.

It was stated that the accused would be produced before the accountability court for obtaining his physical custody.
