Dumper runs over man

RAWALPINDI: A young man associated with a media group was run over and killed by a recklessly-driven dumper at Fawara Chowk early on Thursday.

Raja Aftab Qayyum, 24, was returning home at Adiala Road from his office on a motorbike at about 2:30am when the dumper coming from behind knocked him down, killing him on the spot.

The body was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for a postmortem. A large number of people attended the funeral prayer of the deceased on Thursday.

A relative of the victim said there was no police patrol at Fawara Chowk at the time of the accident even though the offices of the DSP city and other officers were located nearby.

“Had there been any police presence, the reckless driving of the vehicle in the congested area would have been checked and the life of the young man saved,” he said.

The deceased was associated with the media group’s marketing department.

Raja Tahir, the station house officer of Gunjmandi, said the dumper had been impounded by the police and raids were underway to arrest the driver.
