SUKKUR: Earthen lamps, clay toys and several other artefacts were unearthed during six days of excavation at archaeological site Moomal Ji Mari in Mathelo village of Ghotki district, according to an official handout issued on Monday.

Director of excavation and search branch of the antiquities department Naheed Zehra said the excavation work at the site was undertaken on March 6.

They had also found remains of walls made from baked and unbaked bricks besides clay toys and earthen lamps, she said. She said the work on the site would continue for two more weeks but it was difficult at the moment to declare with certainty the age of Moomal Ji Mari. Further excavation would help determine in which era the site fell, she said.

She said that they had engaged local labourers for the excavation who worked under supervision of a five-member team.

History lovers, writers, poets and social workers of Ghotki district appreciated the government step to carry out excavation at Moomal Ji Mari and expressed hope it would help reveal more about the historical site and unearth new facts.
