Senate horse-trading

APROPOS Zahid Husain’s article ‘Senate election and horse-trading’ (March 7). The writer’s criticism is still soft and polite, but ‘brothers in trouble’ would not like even this harmless comment on our system which produces rulers having character resembling ‘dons’ of ‘mafias’, as remarked by the Supreme Court. In all probability the system is going to pieces if the ruling junta does not come to its senses.

The PPP’s Farhatullah Babar is scared as are many others. We all must pray that no harm comes to the state and the Constitution survives.

ALMOST all political leaders are claiming large- scale exchange of notes for votes in the Senate polls. The amount of money alleged to have changed hands is mind-boggling — Rs920 million — for a few senate seats.

If true, can those — both the payers and the beneficiaries — be called upholders of the sacred practices and norms of democracy? If the senators or their sponsors did spend that kind of money, I bet they would not only recover it but much more than they have invested in this lucrative business by means fair and foul Does it not pinch their conscience even a wee bit?
