ISLAMABAD: Millions of rupees were stolen from the ATM safe of Allied Bank’s branch in Super Market on Tuesday. The bank management nominated three of its employees for the heist, all of whom were booked by the police.

The theft was reported to the Kohsar police by the regional head of the bank, Salah Qamar. The complainant said that after noticing the alert, the staff had found that the glass panes at the cash counter were removed to gain access to the ATM safe.

Two of the cash cassettes had been removed while the other two were intact. The bank security system had also been disabled by cutting the wires and the CCTV system was missing as well. An initial inquiry estimates the amount stolen at Rs5,400,500.

The regional head told the police that three employees of the bank had the keys and knew the safe combination.

The Kohsar police registered a case under PPC’s section 409 for criminal breach of trust by a public servant or by a banker, merchant or agent.

When asked, the regional head of the bank said he thinks the bank staff were involved in the theft and that three employees were nominated in his complaint for failure to follow the standard operating procedures.

Kohsar Station House Officer Inspector Ahmed Kamal said all three of the nominated employees had been arrested and were being interrogated.
