Three first information reports (FIR), registered under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, were recorded on Tuesday against more than 100 people accused of involvement in clashes between student groups in Punjab University (PU) earlier this week.

The cases were separately lodged in Lahore's Muslim Town Police Station by the Chief Security Officer of PU, retired Colonel Obaid; the Station House Officer (SHO) of Nawankot, Khawaja Hasan; and the SHO of Sanda, Malik Taimur.

Clashes between Islami Jamiat Taleba (IJT) and Baloch and Pakhtun students of PU had erupted on Monday morning and a chemistry lab of the varsity was set on fire amid skirmishes between the groups. The fights had broken out while preparations for the university's yearly Pioneer Festival were underway.

On Monday, a PU spokesperson said that the administration had decided to suspend at least 35 students allegedly involved in the clashes after Vice-Chancellor Dr Zakria Zakir ordered "action without discrimination."

The university administration had subsequently issued a letter to all relevant heads of departments to suspend the admissions of the 35 students.
