FROM THE PAST PAGES OF DAWN: 1968: Fifty years ago: Monem warns students

DACCA: Mr Abdul Monem Khan, Governor of East Pakistan, today [Jan 21] sternly warned a small section of students who were not only taking active part in political movements but also, backed by self-seeking politicians, had gone to the extent of demonstrating and agitating on behalf of those who had been accused of anti-state activities.

He said that it was a shameful state of affairs and the Government was viewing the matter with great concern. The Government, he said, would not hesitate to take drastic actions against those who were thus being misguided, to the extent of supporting seditious movements and tendencies.

The Governor issued this warning while laying the foundation stone of the third engineering college in the Province at Khulna this afternoon.

Continuing, the Governor assured the people that to those who were inclined to support the cause of sedition, “I have only this much to say that the administration will fail in its duty towards its people and towards the country if it does not strike ruthlessly to effectively tackle these elements.”

He expressed total support to all the right thinking people in weeding out the anti-state elements from the country.
