Couple held for bank fraud

GUJRANWALA: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested on Saturday a couple in a bank fraud case.

FIA Deputy Director Mufakher Adeel said Muhammad Basit and his wife, Sajida Bibi, withdrew Rs3.5 million from the account of one of their relatives Atif maintained in the United Bank Limited, Sialkot branch, through forged signatures.

The FIA arrested them in Gujranwala while bank manager Zeshan Khalid was at large.

The deputy director said they arrested about 12 human traffickers in Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot districts.

DEMAND: Wheat growers in Wazirabad tehsil expressed on Saturday their dissatisfaction over the distribution of the agricultural machinery to farmers by the Punjab government.

Farmers Amanat Cheema, Shehzad Ahmad, Zahid Mahmood and Manzoor Ahmad said that only 24 farmers of as many union councils were provided the subsidized machinery which was too inadequate to meet the demands of 180,000 acres of the tehsil.

They demanded that the chief minister provide more machinery for the farmers.

Agricultural Executive Engineer Asgher Ali said the agricultural machinery was given to farmers on merit and that demand for more machines had been forwarded to higher authorities.
