Grow more trees

Global warming is truly happening. Last week I set out to run an errand for my wife with my son on my motorcycle. I took a wrong turn on Sharea Faisal and found myself in the vicinity of Hill Park, a place I had not visited for over 30 years. I decided to step inside the park.

The sun was setting, surrounding the hill with a warm cozy glow when our visit was about to end. As we exited the park and were proceeding downhill, I noticed the difference between temperatures. For the few seconds it takes to travel between the hill and residential area, one feels the drop in mercury. We continued onward towards Saddar.

Our return trip took us past the Baloch Regiment Officers’ Mess and Trinity Church. On this stretch again, one feels the drop in temperature because of the large trees on both sides of Zaibunnissa Street.

Once back home, I pondered how full grown trees on just a small stretch of road contributes to a sharp drop in temperature. This experience has turned me into a sworn environmentalist.

Trees are essential to our planet’s health. Please make an effort to plant a tree each month, in your home, school or nearby park. The government should focus on creating awareness. Let us all strive to ensure a greener Karachi and a greener Pakistan.
