SINCE 1992 international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) and other international agencies have been working in Pakistan. It is these institutes which come forward where people have no capacity to tackle disasters like health problems, education problems, gender discrimination and lack of awareness among the people.

Such NGOs have contributed greatly to improve the people’s condition. They have brought about great reforms in the form of development which even the government was not able to achieve. NGOs have brought reforms in the field of education; the USAID-funded Pakistan Reading Project is a worththy example that has modified the curriculum of primary education and raised teachers’ capacity of teaching children and improving their reading skills.

Also, the International Rescue Committee is currently leading a Building Disaster Resilience in Pakistan funded by UKAID in different regions of the country, including Sindh which has capacitated people to defy natural and man-made disasters. The 2010 flood was a major disaster in Pakistan that had deminished the living standards of the people and devastated the country’s major regions.

The government has done nothing and instead indulged in corruption. If such NGOs are banned or not allowed to work, will the government provide jobs to those who are working in NGOs?
