A Trump faux pas

US President Donald Trump has recognised occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and decided to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem. His ill-advised move can have grave repercussions for both states. The controversial decision has invited a furious reaction from the Muslim world, besides scores of other states, including Great Britain. Meanwhile, Trump’s credibility and competency as a leader of a major power have been questioned yet again.

The Palestinians have announced another intifada to get Israel to give them their freedom and their occupied lands. Therefore, there are chances of violent confrontations between Israeli forces and the Palestinian people. This could lead to widespread clashes before the embassies and diplomatic outposts of the US and Israel all over the world, particularly the Muslim world.

The United Nations should immediately respond to this illegitimate action. Besides, the OIC, the Arab League, and the recently formed military coalition of 39 Muslim countries should exert pressure on the international community, including the UN, European Union and International Court of Justice and human rights organisations to make the Trump administration reverse the decision.

THE acknowledgement of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is a condemnable move on the part of President Trump.

Jerusalem, which is under Israeli occupation, has a special status for Muslims, Christians and Jews. Despite warnings from the international community, Trump has made a decision that has sparked controversy all over the world and caused a furious reaction across an already volatile Middle East.

While Trump basks in the ‘glory’ of being the US President to solve this issue, the world condemns a US snafu.
