Pakistanis shine at Singapore powerlifting event

LAHORE: Pakistan’s men and women demonstrated brilliant performance in the Oceania-Pacific Powerlifting Championships at the Park Avenue Convention Centre in Singapore where they claimed 11 gold medals, eight by women and three by men.

According to the information received here from Singapore, Saniha Ghafoor and Twinkle Sohail earned four gold medals each in squat, bench-press and dead-lift event in the 57kg and 72kg categories.

Saniha showed excellent performance in bench-press and dead-lift events, earning huge applause from everyone at the championships.

She has been invited by Australian Power-lifting Federation for a three-month training programme sponsored by the Australian Sports Commission at Melbourne.

Twinkle (72kg), the 2015 Asian Gold medallist, repeated her history of winning gold medal and won all four medals at stake.

Sybil Sohail is yet to compete in 47kg seniors competition which is being held on Sunday.

The men’s team also kept Pakistan flag high in 105kg by Syed Nadeem Hashmi in Masters-1 as he seized gold. Mohammad Ahmed Khan secured gold in 120kg sub-junior category.

Mahmood Heera of Pakistan won gold medal in 120kg Masters-1 category.

The Pakistan squad returns home from Singapore on Dec 12.
