Lawyers assure Sharif of support for struggle

ISLAMABAD: Many senior lawyers and members of the legal fraternity met former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday and vowed to support him in his struggle “to restore the sanctity of the ballot and uphold democracy in the country”.

According to a statement, released by Senator Asif Kirmani, former leaders of the Supreme Court Bar Association and office-bearers of the Pakistan Bar Council, as well as senior lawyers, met Mr Sharif in the capital.

The former PM said that he had been on the forefront of the movement for the restoration of the judiciary, adding that lawyers had rendered several sacrifices to uphold democracy in the country.

The country was founded by a jurist who wore the black coat, the statement quoted Mr Sharif as saying.

The meeting was attended by lawyers Yasin Azad, Latif Afridi, Kamran Murtaza, Azam Nazir Tarar, Akhtar Hussain, Qalbe Hussain and Fazle Haq Abbasi, while Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana and Asif Kirmani were also present, the statement said.
