Literati, nationalists condole death of Ibrahim Joyo

KARACHI: Leaders of Sindhi nationalist parties, literary figures, Sindhi Adabi Sangat and bar councils expressed grief over the death of renowned intellectual and literary icon Mohammad Ibrahim Joyo on Thursday and termed his demise a great loss for Sindhi society, literature, nationalist movement and progressive forces.

Dr Mohammad Ali Shaikh, Vice Chancellor of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU), paid rich tribute to Joyo who passed away at the age of 102 years in Hyderabad on Thursday morning, adds PPI.

He said in a statement that Joyo was a great thinker and educationist who played a major role in the development of Sindhi language and literature. He was an illustrious student of Sindh Madressatul Islam from where he had passed his matriculation in 1934 and also served his alma mater as a teacher from 1938 to 1940 and again from 1941 to 1947, he said.

Mr Shaikh said that late Joyo’s service was terminated after he wrote a book on the issues of Sindh before partition. “But I withdrew that order on Aug 1, 2015, as head of the institution,” he said.

He said that SMIU had also published English and Sindhi translations of Joyo’s biography. SMIU would soon organise a literary reference in honour of late Joyo.

HYDERABAD: Joyo’s death has saddened Sindhi nationalist leaders who termed his demise a great loss for Sindh, nationalist movement and progressive forces.

Awami Tehreek leader Rasool Bux Palijo said that Joyo was a humble intellectual and the vacuum left by his death could never be filled.

Qaumi Awami Tehreek leader Ayaz Latif Palijo said that Joyo’s death was an irreparable loss for Sindh. Joyo championed the cause of enlightenment and progressive thoughts in Sindh, he said.

Sindh Taraqqi-pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi said that personalities like Joyo’s were born in centuries. Joyo always pleaded a strong case for Sindh from different forums, he said.

Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz-Arisar chairman Dr Mir Alam Mari and chairman of his own faction of Jeay Sindh Mahaz, Riaz Chandio, said that Joyo influenced many through his writings. They announced seven days of mourning over the sad demise of Joyo.

Sindhi Adabi Sangat (SAS) secretary general Ahmed Solangi said that SAS would organise commemorative meetings for Joyo.

APP adds: Sindh Bar Council and Sindh High Court Bar Association observed Thursday as a day of mourning and stayed away from court proceedings over the demise of literary legend Mohammad Ibrahim Joyo.

The office-bearers of SBC and SHCBA expressed grief over Joyo’s demise.

KHAIRPUR: SAS central leader Jam Muhabbat Sahito said that nobody could substitute Joyo in Sindhi literary world. SAS had announced seven days of mourning over his sad demise.

Renowned story writer Dr Aijaz Samoon and poet Hubdar Jagirani said that Joyo was pioneer of modern thought in Sindhi literature.

Khairpur Arts Council president Syed Akbar Shah said that Sindhi nation could never forget Joyo’s services.

JSQM central vice chairman Amjad Khan Mahesar said that Joyo’s name would be written in golden words. JSQM would observe three days of mourning over Joyo’s demise, he said.
