Pir Kaleem elected president as Asma Jahangir's camp sweeps SCBA elections

The Asma Jahangir camp convincingly won the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections held on Tuesday, Oct 31, with Pir Kaleem Khurshid elected as the president, according to unofficial results received late on the same day.

Khurshid, of the Independent group led by Jahangir, received 1,142 votes to clinch the all-important position while 1,064 votes were polled in favour of his opponent, Hafiz Abdur Rehman Ansari of the Hamid Khan-led Professional group.

Safdar Hussain Tarar, also of the Independent group, was elected as the general secretary of the bar for 2017-18, having received 1,372 votes, while his opponent Mian Mohammad Aslam Parvez received 763 votes.

According to the unofficial results, the Independent group has won most of other seats as well, including that of finance secretary, where Arshad Zaman Kiyani won by a single vote margin.

Of the eight candidates contesting for four vice presidential slots, Fareed Ahmad Dayo was elected from Sindh, Malik Masoodur Rehman Awan won from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Qamar Zaman Qureshi was elected from Punjab while Mian Rauf Atta won the Balochistan seat. All of them belong to the Independent group.

Pakistan Bar Council vice-chairman Ahsan Bhoon, its members Azam Nazir Tarar and Abid Saqi, former governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa and Ramzan Chaudhry were among main supporters of Khurshid.
