Youth killed, another injured by rivals

SAHIWAL: A youth was shot dead while another was critically injured over old enmity at Babaywala Chowk on Friday.

According to details, Tariq alias Deema and his brother Rehan, residents of Bilal Colony, were present at a tea shop.

Another youth, also named Tariq, his brother Usman Mani and their friends arrived there and opened fire at Deema and Rehan. As a result, Deema died on the spot while Rehan was shifted to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Teaching Hospital in critical condition.

There were reports that the victims had forbidden the alleged killers from carrying out criminal activities, including running gambling dens, in the area. This created bad blood between the parties.

The victims’ families held a protest at the Babaywala Chowk and blocked traffic by burning tyres on it. They demanded arrest of the killers.

ARRESTED: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) arrested Chichawatni Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital’s lab technician for taking bribe from a patient.

Lab technician Muhammad Afzal had demanded Rs3,000 from a patient for arranging his operation from a surgeon. The patient registered a complaint with the ACE which caught him red-handed while taking bribe.

An inquiry had already found Afzal guilty of involvement in Rs310,000 corruption case in the health department.

THQ Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Shahid Iqbal confirmed to Dawn that Afzal was found involved in corruption by the audit team.

“As no dismissal order was served to him so he was performing duty as a lab technician,” the MS said, adding that Afzal would not be spared in previous inquiry and would be dismissed from service.
