Articles 62, 63 weakened Constitution, says Nafisa

KHAIRPUR: Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution were given by dictator General Ziaul Haq, which have weakened the Constitution.

According to a press release issued on Wednesday, this was stated by MNA Nafisa Shah at a one-day seminar on the ‘Importance of Constitution for Democratic System of State’ organised by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto School of Law, Shah Abdul Latif University (Salu), Khairpur.

Speaking as keynote speaker, Sindh PPP vice president Nafisa Shah said it was a matter of pride that Salu had established the school of law in the name of world-renowned politician and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) founder Z.A. Bhutto.

The Constitution provided the concept of popular sovereignty, she said, adding that the 1973 Constitution was a gift of Z.A. Bhutto; it provided ample opportunities in connection with checks and balances. The Senate was a major example of checks and balances in parliamentary practices, she said.

Many times dictators had held in abeyance and abrogated the Constitution, but it remained intact, she said.

Ms Shah said civil society, political parties and legal fraternity could play their due role in the promotion of democracy, fundamental rights and constitutionalism.

Earlier, Manzoor Hussain, advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and principal of the school of law, welcomed the guest speaker and the audience.
