Cabinet body approves draft to amend SZABMU Act

ISLAMABAD: The Cabinet Committee on Disposal of Legislative Cases (CCLC) on Monday approved the proposed draft bill to amend the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University Act 2013.

The CCLC held a meeting under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Law Zahid Hamid which was attended by Minister of State for CADD Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Khawaja Zaheer and others.

Dr Tariq briefed the committee about the proposed draft bill and replied to questions raised by the members.

He said after the approval of the proposed bill efforts would be made to include it on the agenda of the cabinet meeting which was expected to be held on Wednesday.

The university was established under the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University Act 2013, and the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) was affiliated with the university.

The hospital employees were given the option of joining the university. However, out of the 4,000 employees, only 22 opted for the university. The Pims employees have held several protests demanding the separation of the hospital from the university.

CADD decided to restore the status of Pims as a teaching hospital and the draft bill was prepared in consultation with other divisions. The draft bill was sent to the prime minister as a summary through the law ministry.

Last week, the prime minister approved the placement of the proposed bill on the agenda of the CCLC.
