Bookshop owner shot dead
GUJRANWALA: The owner of a renowned bookshop was shot dead by two unidentified assailants on a road in the main Urdu Bazaar here on Sunday.
Muhammad Sarfaraz was on his way to his shop, Fazal Book Depot, in front of the City Girls College when two unidentified men appeared on a motorcycle and opened fire on him. Sarfaraz died on the spot.
The police registered a case against the unidentified killers and started investigation.
The local traders union held a protest demonstration at Niyain Chowk against Sarfaraz’ murder. They burnt tyres and demanded police to arrest the killers at the earliest.
SEALED: The district authorities have sealed five illegal gas decanting shops.
Municipal Corporation land manager Shahzad Ahmed Khokhar and his team started a grand operation against the owners of illegal decanting shops of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) on the directions of AC Rao Sohail Akhtar.
During the operation, the team raided shops of Sikandar in Poondanwala Chowk, Hafiz on Sialkot Bypass and Sajjad, Aqib and Ashraf Hanjra and sealed them. Cases were lodged against the suspects.
Meanwhile, the team also took action against illegal encroachments on the Pasroor Road Bypass and seized two trucks, goods and cleared the road for traffic.
PROTEST: Sanitary workers and other employees of the Solid Waste Management Company held a demonstration on the Court Road and in the office of the company for ‘undue’ cut in their salaries ranging from Rs3,000 to 13,000 every month.
The protesters, led by Haji Naseeruddin Humayon Malik, raised slogans against the company inspectors and officials for cut in the salaries. Addressing the workers, their leaders termed the deduction from the workers’ salaries unjust. They demanded the deputy commissioner and mayor take notice of the injustice against them.
