Wapda workers observe black day

PESHAWAR/LOWER DIR: Members of All Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Workers Union on Monday observed a black day across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa against the murder of a lineman in Batkhela area of Malakand Agency and demanded of the government to ensure protection to workers of Peshawar Electric Supply Company.

In Peshawar, the Pesco workers hoisted black banners and flags on offices of the power company, besides staging a demonstration.

They were holding banners and placards inscribed with demands for compensation to the heirs of the deceased and protection to other staff members.

They expressed concern over the murder of lineman Khaista Rahman a few days ago and asked the government to arrest the killers at the earliest.

The wapda installations and workers, they said had been under threat due to negligence of the government and asked for immediate steps to protect the employees and Wapda assets in the province.

In Lower Dir, the Pesco employees observed a pen-down strike, wore black armbands and hoisted black flags to protest the killing of lineman.

The speakers said Pesco lineman was brutally killed on duty by known persons at Joligram some days ago, and demanded registration of case against the accused under the anti-terrorism law.

They said the Pesco employees, particularly line staff and construction unit, felt insecurity in the area. They also demanded of the government and law enforcement agencies to provide adequate security to Pesco staff.
