Three different groups involved in the killing of policemen in Karachi have been busted by law enforcement agencies, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said at a Defence Day ceremony at Pakistan Air Force Masroor Base on Wednesday.
"This success will help to eliminate organised terrorism and crime in the city," he said, praising the efforts of law enforcement agencies. "We have destroyed them [terrorist groups] to a considerable extent but there is still a lot of work to be done."
On the issue of cleanliness during Eidul Azha celebrations, Shah said he had warned local bodies to keep the city clean or face strict action. Over two million cattle were sacrificed this year, he said.
Recalling sacrifices made by the PAF in the 1965 war, he praised the forces for their valour.
He was received by Air Officer Commanding Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Haseeb Paracha on his arrival at the base.
"The evolving security environment has considerably altered the threat scenario for our beloved homeland, he said, adding: "Notwithstanding continued external threats, the internal mosaic of militancy and extremism has also become a matter of concern for all of us."
"The PAF has remained on the forefront in this noble struggle as well as an important component of the military instrument to root out extremism and militancy from our homeland.
"Today, as we are celebrating 52nd anniversary of the Defence day of Pakistan, let us re-pledge that we will devote our best endeavours to live up to the aspirations of the nation by devoting ourselves to our sacred mission and will spare no sacrifice in the fulfilment of our duty to safeguard our sovereignty and independence,” Shah concluded.
Recent arrests
At least 7 police officers have been killed in attacks on police in Karachi since June. Rangers on Tuesday had linked a newly emerged outfit Ansarul Shariah Pakistan (ASP) with a number of these killings.
The ASP was unearthed after being found involved in the attack on Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan lawmaker Khwaja Izharul Hasan. It comprises of former students of universities including Karachi University and NED, security forces say.
