SC seeks report from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa govt on use of drugs in educational institutions

The Supreme Court on Tuesday took notice of the alleged use of narcotics in educational institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and sought a report from the provincial government in this regard.

The apex court was hearing the bail plea of a suspected drug peddler.

Justice Dost Mohammad Khan questioned the steps taken by the KP government to prevent the use of drugs on campuses. “Have you arrested the officials who are facilitating the sale of drugs on campuses?” he asked.

The judge said that he knows which people are involved in this heinous crime, saying he would refrain from taking their names in the presence of media. “I fail to understand how drugs find their way into educational institutions despite such strict security measures,” Justice Khan remarked.

According to the counsel representing the KP government, the use of narcotics in educational institutions has almost ended.

Dismissing the bail plea of drug peddling suspect Mohammed Amjad, the judge ordered the trial court to finish the hearing in two months.

Earlier in June, the Balochistan High Court (BHC) had directed the provincial education department to conduct drug tests of all male and female students studying in educational institutions across the province.

A divisional bench of the BHC, comprising Justice Jamal Mandokhail and Justice Nazeer Ahmed Langove, had passed the order on an application of a citizen against the increasing number of student addicts in educational institutions in Balochistan.
