Thriving feudalism

FEUDALISM is thriving in Pakistan particularly in rural areas where the state’s writ is fragile and tribal jirgas are the norm than an exception. The situation, unfortunately, is as grim in the urban areas. The difference between urban and rural feudalism is extreme.

Rural farm lords tend to provide food and shelter, and a sense of security. His urban counterpart, however, exploits his lackeys and forces them into accepting living standards below society’s needs.

Even our corporate world is by and large influenced by the prevalent feudalism. The scions and relatives of these families are also heading public sector companies and institutions. It is rare that outsiders with the same or greater competence are allowed to take charge.

Our feudal lords portray themselves as opinion leaders in society whereas their opinions are opinionated and meant only to serve what are their interests.
