From the past pages of dawn : 1967 : Fifty years ago : Nasser impressed by Tito

There was no issue of the newspaper on Aug 15, 1967, on account of Independence Day. The following extract and visual are from the previous day’s issue.

CAIRO: President Gamal Nasser, although impressed by the “realistic attitude” of President Tito of Yugoslavia, told the latter that the stand taken by some Arab countries was hampering him in his search for a diplomatic solution of the Middle East crisis, Yugoslav sources said here today [Aug 13]. The sources said the two leaders after three days of talks here, to be followed by a second round next week, had so far made no decision which could bring the settlement of the crisis closer.

However, the source said, UAR leaders listened carefully to what President Tito had to say to them about the messages he had received from Washington and Moscow before coming to Cairo last week — the Soviet message, they said, reaffirmed the Soviet position emphasising the Israeli withdrawal while the American message, signed by the State Department, amounted to a plea that the Arab countries issue a solemn declaration that they were no longer at war with Israel.

[Meanwhile, as reported by agencies in Rawalpindi,] Aslam Pahlwan, who hails from the renowned family of Bholu brothers of Lahore, has been awarded the President’s Pride of Performance for sports in recognition of his services in the field of wrestling.

A purse of Rs 10,000 also goes to the grappler with the President’s Independence Day award, announced here today [Aug 13].

Aslam (41) weights 26 stones. He is still unbeaten in the free style wrestling ring since he stepped into competitive wrestling both home and abroad. He is one of the five world-known wrestling brothers, Bholu (44), Azam (38), Akram (33) and Goga (33). The five brothers toured England in May last and have returned to Pakistan after fighting against 12 challengers there and beating all of them.

The five brothers excel in the eastern style of wrestling — purely strength and power demonstration. They even have offered 5,000 sterling prize to any strong men in the world who can beat any one of them in a straight fight but they returned home with their record unbeaten and the prize unclaimed.
