Show-cause notice issued to lawyer for threatening judge

KARACHI: A judicial magistrate again issued on Wednesday a show-cause notice to a lawyer for allegedly threatening and misbehaving with him.

In the notice reissued to advocate Sohail Baig Noori through secretaries of the Sindh Bar Council and Karachi Bar, judicial magistrate (West) Shahid Hussain Soomro said the lawyer broke into his chamber on June 3 when he was hearing a case.

It said Mr Noori had interrupted the proceedings, extended threats of dire consequences to the magistrate and used derogatory and filthy language.

The court observed that the conduct of the lawyer amounted to intentional insult and interruption to judicial proceedings. The show-cause notice asked the lawyer why proceedings under Sections 228 (intentional insult or interruption to public servant sitting in judicial proceedings) of the Pakistan Penal Code and 476 (procedure in cases of contempt of lawful authority) and 480 (procedure in certain cases of contempt) of CrPC might not be initiated against him.

The magistrate directed the lawyer to submit his reply till June 10.

The lawyer had become annoyed for not getting a favourable decision. Several identical complaints were also filed against a number of lawyers in the past while advocate Noori’s practicing licence was suspended in 2010 in a similar case, but it was later restored.

It may be recalled that another lawyer, G.M. Syed, along with his associates, had allegedly manhandled two reporters on the premises of the City Courts a couple of days ago and also snatched their mobile phones when they were trying to film the lawyers who were subjecting a woman litigant to body search.
