KARACHI: The attorney general of Pakistan asked the Sindh prosecutor general on Saturday to initiate proceedings against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Nihal Hashmi for his recent remarks about civil servants.

The AGP wrote a letter to the prosecutor general stating that since the speech was made by Mr Hashmi in Karachi, proceeding against him be initiated there.

The letter sent by Deputy Attorney General Sajid Ilyas said that after examining the record and material, the AGP was of the view that Mr Hashmi’s speech also fell within the ambit of Sections 189 (Threat of injury to public servant), 228 (Intentional insult or interruption to public servant sitting in judicial proceeding) and 505 (Statements conducing to public mischief) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Order reserved on Sharjeel’s plea

The Sindh High Court has reserved its order on the application of Pakistan Peoples Party leader and former provincial information minister Sharjeel Memon seeking confirmation of his protective bail in a Rs5.76 billion corruption reference.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Junaid Ghaffar on Friday reserved its order to a date to be later pronounced by the court’s office after it heard arguments from the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) special prosecutor.

The PPP leader faces two corruption references — one relating to alleged award of advertisements at exorbitant rates and the other to illegal adjustment and consolidation of hundreds of acres of land in favour of a private housing project.
