Metro bus driver involved in accident arrested

RAWALPINDI: The metro bus driver who ran over a young woman in Rehmanabad has been arrested, police said on Saturday.

The driver is now in the custody of the Sadiqabad police, with whom the brother of the deceased lodged a complaint.

Police personnel conducted a raid at the metro bus office in Islamabad, where they apprehended the driver who ran over Sumaira Ahmed Friday morning. Police said further investigation into the case is ongoing.

Sadiqabad Station House Officer Raja Tahir confirmed that the police have arrested the driver during action in the capital’s metro bus office. He said the driver confessed to running down the victim, and the police would produce him before a court for further proceedings.

A 19 year old medical student was killed in a road accident when a metro bus collided with a pole on the metro bus track in Rehmanabad and then ran her over. Ahmed’s death sparked protests from her fellow students, first at the Distrist Headquarters Hospital and later on Murree Road.

The protest on Murree Road disrupted the flow of traffic, and the incident also led to a halt in the metro bus service between the twin cities.

Speaking to Dawn, Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) chief engineer Ather Hussain Bukhari said the provincial government has constituted a committee to investigate the accident.

“Statements from the driver and other staff will be recorded by the committee within two days,” he said, adding that the committee has inspected the site of the accident.

He said the initial reported had mainly attributed to accident to speeding. Despite construction work on the track, the driver was driving at a speed of 45 kilometres per hour. He said a final report would be issued after statements from the driver and other people on the site.
