ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan discussed on Thursday an inquiry committee’s report on a Dawn story about a security meeting and decided to make it public over the next 24 to 36 hours.

According to a spokesman for the interior ministry, Chaudhry Nisar informed the prime minister that some legal and administrative measures were required for implementing recommendations of the committee and making the report public.

“Required measures will be taken in the next 24 to 36 hours after which recommendations of the committee will be shared with the people,” he said.

The report was reportedly presented to the prime minister on Wednesday. It was expected that after PM Sharif went through the report it would be made public but that could not happen.

PM directs Nisar to implement committee’s recommendations in letter and spirit

The spokesman said the prime minister had directed the interior minister to implement the committee’s recommendations in letter and spirit. The meeting also discussed some other issues.

The inquiry committee was formed to ascertain the source who leaked information about a high-level security meeting between top military and civilian officials. The committee recently completed its inquiry and prepared the report.

Judicial reforms

The National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta) has prepared a bunch of recommendations relating to judicial reforms which will be implemented with the consent of federal and provincial governments.

The interior ministry’s spokesman said the authority had started work on the judicial reform package in 2016 and not only the federal and provincial institutions were involved but separate groups of experts were also formed to finalise the recommendations.

He said Nacta made recommendations for all four pillars of the judicial system — police, prosecution, judiciary and prisons — in the light of suggestions given by the federal, provincial, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan governments.

The interior minister has directed Nacta to make sure that all its recommendations are implemented within the prescribed timeframe. “The implementation should start immediately with the consent of all stakeholders and this process should complete by the end of this year,” Chaudhry Nisar said.

Karachi visit

The interior minister will visit Karachi on Friday to hold important meetings and attend Rangers’ passing out parade.

He will also visit Rangers and Coast Guard headquarters and hold separate meetings on security matters.
