Two women and as many men were wounded as Indian troops shelled different villages in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) from across the Line of Control (LoC) on Monday.

Mohammad Shakil, 35, was injured in Janjot Bahadar village of Khuiratta sector in the southern Kotli district at about 3:30am, a police official from the area told Dawn.

"The Indians were also shelling the neighbouring Charhoi sector of Kotli district, but so far no casualties had been reported from there," the official added.

In the Samahni sector of the southernmost Bhimber district, a man and two women were injured in Indian shelling that began at about 8am, said Yasin Baig, superintendent of police (SP) in Bhimber.

“The Indians resorted to firing with small as well as heavy firearms in the Samahni sector at about 7am without any provocation,” Baig told Dawn.

He identified the victims as Ishrat Bibi, 35, Irum Younas, 18, and Atif Majeed, 22.

However, their condition is not critical, he said.

Samahni is one of the three tehsils in AJK’s southernmost Bhimber district, which has lately been repeatedly hit by Indian troops.

He told Dawn that Tandar, Baroh, Chahi, Nihala, Khamba and Kotli Gujran villages of Samahni sector had been hit by the enemy troops with both small and heavy arms.

“The shelling is continuing intermittently,” he said.

Another official, who did not want to be quoted, said Pakistani troops were "effectively responding" to Indian shelling.
