963 schools in Balochistan not functional

Despite an education emergency imposed by the provincial government, 963 schools out of more than 13,000 schools in the province are yet to be made functional.

Secretary Education Balochistan Shan ul Haq termed the lack of building and teacher as the main cause behind non-functioning school.

“All efforts are being made to ensure functioning of educational institutions in the province,” said Haq.

However, sources in the department put the number of ghost and dysfunctional schools higher than what was quoted by the secretary education.

Another official from the education department claimed that there were 5,000 one room, one teacher schools across the province.

He added that most of the schools are deprived of basic facilities.

The secretary education said more than 3,000 teachers will be inducted this year through the national testing service.

"We will make the dysfunctional schools functional after this recruitment,” said Haq.

The provincial government has declared emergency with regards to education and announced implementation of article 25-a of the Constitution, which says the state “shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of five to sixteen years in such manner as may be determined by law.”
