KARACHI: A suspended employee of the University of Karachi was found dead on Sunday on the premises of the varsity and the police concerned believed that it was a suicide.

Mobina Town SHO Changez Ali Khan told Dawn that the body of 40-year-old Niaz Ahmed was found floating in a well near the KU water plant. The officer added that the man might have died around four days ago.

He said that the police believed that the dead had committed suicide by jumping into the well.

The dead, who was living in the KU staff colony, had been suspended by the varsity administration. He remained emotionally disturbed for the past two years, claimed the officer.

Meanwhile, Karachi University Teachers Society president Shakeel Farooqi told Dawn that as per rules an inquiry should be initiated against a suspended employee, which should be completed within 90 days.

If the charges against the employee are proved, he/she must be terminated or if found innocent, a relief shall be provided to him.

But the Kuts president regretted that for the past two years, the man had remained suspended, which reflected the performance of the KU administration.

Mr Farooqi said that a conduit or stream had existed on the premises of the KU since the colonial era where wells had been dug at different points.

The KU employee might have jumped into one such well and drowned, he added.
