Trader arrested for selling ‘tainted’ churan

BAHAWALPUR: Derawar police claimed on Monday to have arrested a shopkeeper on charges of selling a digestive powder after two boys Talah (7) and Saood (10) swallowed the adulterated churan and died on Saturday.

The victims’ parents had declined to get a case registered against shopkeeper Saifur Rehman of Village 101/DNB-Yazman. But, a health department team raided the shop and handed Saif over to police. The team also sent samples of the powder seized from the shop for chemical examination.

According to police sources, Saif told the investigators that some people from Ahmedpur East had supplied the churan to his shop.

Further investigation is under way.

INJURED: A trader was shot at and injured outside his shop on Monday night in Islamia Colony.

Police said Muhammad Akram was closing his shop at night when two motorcyclists approached him and opened fire. He received four bullets and was said to be critical at Bahawal Victoria Hospital. Baghdadul Jadid police have registered a case with no arrest.

MATRIC EXAM: As many as 164,491 candidates will appear in the annual matriculation examination 2017 (class-IX and X) to be commenced from March 1.

The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education has set up 218 centres in Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan districts, says a BISE press release.
