KARACHI: Insanitary conditions in Lyari

KARACHI, Dec 29: Residents of Baghdadi Union Council (Lyari) have expressed concern over the prevailing insanitary conditions in the area.

They say heaps of garbage were lying unattended at public places and streets have become a breeding ground for flies and ,mosquitoes.

Area people said that the negligence by the officials concerned had resulted in such a situation.

Officials said that they could not deliver an effective

service because of shortage of funds, equipment and necessary staff.

Garbage collection is one of the serious problems faced by the town administration in Lyari as over the years most of the garbage sites in the locality have disappeared due to the land-grabbing by the mafia.

This has resulted in the emergence of informal garbage sites which are a common sight here.

Most of the localities in the town have informal dumping places and roads and streets are littered unattended.

One could hardly endure the smell from a informal garbage dumping ,site, while passing through a street in these areas.

Residents and community leader say that the system seems to be, incapable of performing its normal functions and all efforts to, revamp it under the new local bodies system have failed.

The scattered garbage with overflowing garbage has ,aggravated the sanitary conditions in many localities, exposing ,people to health hazards.

The situation is getting more painful in the Baghdadi Union, Council area where civic agencies have failed to manage the garbage disposal system.

Expressing concern over the situation, the people of affected areas said if immediate remedial steps were not taken, an epidemic might break out in the area.
