Two ‘militants’ killed, police official injured in encounter

KARACHI: Two suspected militants associated with the self-styled Islamic State were killed and a policeman was wounded in a shoot-out in Manghopir on Thursday, officials said.

They added that police, acting on intelligence reports about the presence of some militants and criminal elements, conducted a raid in the Ghazi Goth area of Manghopir. The raid turned into an exchange of gunfire.

SSP West Nasir Aftab said: “The armed men in the hideout attacked personnel of our team when they were busy taking positions. The attack led to retaliation from the police which triggered exchange of gunfire. During the encounter, two militants were killed.”

He said the deceased militants were not identified so far, but the investigators had reasons to believe that both were associated with IS and involved in the killing of DSP Afzal Shigri in Gulshan-i-Iqbal in November 2016.

“We have also recovered two hand grenades, a laptop, 9mm pistols and a motorbike from the hideout. Our constable Malik Riaz, who was wounded in the encounter, has been shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment,” said SSP Aftab.
