Four policemen held for ‘death in custody’

OKARA: Basirpur police on Thursday registered a case against an assistant sub-inspector and three constables and arrested them for allegedly torturing to death a man in custody.

According to some villagers, Basirpur ASI Mirza Ismail and three constables, one of them identified as Ahmad Hassan, on Wednesday night allegedly bundled 55-year-old mechanic Muhammad Husain into a police van at Tiplani village and took him away.

The family rushed to the Basirpur police station but didn’t find Husain there. Later, the family came to know that Husain was lying dead on the bridge of a minor near the village.

Police took the body into custody and shifted it to DHQ hospital for autopsy.

The family and relatives of the deceased staged a protest against the alleged police torture.

DPO Muhammad Faisal Rana has suspended from service the four policemen who have been taken into custody.
