Proceedings in the Panamagate case seeking the disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were adjourned till Feb 6 on Wednesday after one of the judges on the five-member bench hearing the case was taken ill a day earlier.

As the hearing resumed today, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, who heads the bench, postponed the proceedings of the case till Monday, as Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed is currently hospitalised after he suffered from a cardiac problem.

Justice Saeed was rushed to the Rawalpindi Insitute of Cardiology (RIC) on Tuesday night after complaining of chest pains.

The judge underwent angioplasty on Tuesday night. He was operated on by a team of doctors led by former Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology commandant retired Gen Azhar Kiyani.

Justice Khosa said the hearing has been delayed "until Justice Azmat Saeed is available and allowed by his doctors [to attend the proceedings]".

"He had a simple blockage and there was no need for surgery. The blockage has been removed," the judge said as he expressed his gratitude to Gen Kiyani for attending to Justice Azmat.

"Doctors have asked him to rest for two days," Justice Khosa said.

The judge added that it will be decided on Monday when the bench will continue to hear the case.

Gen Kiyani earlier told Dawn that the judge has "been shifted to the ICU, where he is in a stable condition".

Advocate Salman Akram Raja, the counsel representing Prime Minister's son Hussain Nawaz presented his arguments before the five-member bench of the apex court during the last hearing of the case on Tuesday.
